Small Talk

Small Talk?

What is it about ‘small talk’

That terrifies me?

It’s just idle chat

But I’m pre-programmed

Not to join in

Terrified I might say something I shouldn’t

Let the cat out of the bag

Blurt out to the world

‘I’m sorry, I don’t know what to say.’

I feel sick and breathless

Stomach churning

Like a jet engine

Clammy hands

(Lovely for greeting people with)

There is food

But I can’t eat it

It will turn to ash in my mouth

And I will choke

People keep urging me to

‘Help yourself’

Which is the last thing

I can do at the moment

In my head

I am wringing my hands

Begging to be left alone

Fighting the

‘Flight or fight’ response

And trying not to cry

What a sad, sorry excuse of a person

A wretch

A waste of air

So no – No ‘small talk’ for me

  1. Your writing is amazing! This so perfectly expresses how I am in social settings. I’m awkward, and clumsy, and I forget my own name.
